Should You Size Up a Hockey Jersey? | Athlein Sports

You may need a larger hockey jersey when adding bulky layers, but buying one size bigger is not a reliable rule. Some hockey jerseys already include room for pads. Others are designed for fans and sit closer to the body. Choose using the garment's actual measurements and your intended use.

Start with the type of jersey

A playing jersey, a replica fan jersey, and a fashion jersey can all carry the same size label while fitting differently. Product terms such as authentic, premium, and replica also vary between brands.

Check whether the manufacturer describes the garment as suitable for equipment. For casual wear, consider the shirt or hoodie underneath it. For play, consider shoulder pads, elbow pads, and the movement needed to handle a stick.

Avoid treating a numerical size as a universal chest measurement. Numbered jersey systems are brand-specific. The chart for the exact model matters more than the label printed in the collar.

Read the chart before adding a size

Determine whether the chart lists body dimensions or finished garment measurements. A body chest measurement describes the wearer. A flat chest width describes the jersey laid on a surface. They cannot be compared as though they were the same number.

For example, Bauer's Flex practice jersey guide explicitly labels its figures as finished garment measurements and explains how chest width, body length, and sleeve length are measured. This is why a size recommendation should begin with the chart's measurement method. Read the Bauer measurement guide.

If you already have a jersey that fits well over your gear, measure it using the new supplier's method. Comparing two garments is often more useful than converting an everyday T-shirt size into a hockey size.

When sizing up makes sense

Consider the next size when the intended layers leave the torso or sleeves restrictive and the larger garment still has a manageable length. A growth allowance can also be appropriate for young players, provided the jersey works safely and comfortably now.

Check the result in motion. The bigger size should improve clearance without creating long cuffs, a dragging hem, or excess fabric around the gloves.

If only one area is wrong, consider a different cut. More sleeve volume, a wider torso, or a shorter body may solve the problem better than increasing every dimension together.

When a larger size creates another problem

A small player wearing oversized pads may need room through the upper body but still need shorter sleeves. A goalkeeper may need a goalie cut. A woman may prefer a different relationship between chest width and hem width. These are pattern questions as much as size questions.

Never reduce, loosen, or reposition protective equipment just to fit a jersey. Choose clothing around correctly fitted equipment.

For custom orders, confirm the size before names and numbers are applied. Personalized garments may have different return terms from blank stock, so understand the supplier's policy before approving production.

Make the final choice with a movement check

Try the jersey over the exact outfit you plan to wear. Reach forward, raise your arms, rotate your shoulders, and bend at the hips. If two sizes appear suitable, compare sleeve control and freedom of movement rather than choosing by appearance alone.

The right hockey jersey size is the one that fits your use, equipment, and body proportions. Sometimes that means sizing up. Sometimes it means staying with your size or choosing a more suitable cut.
