What to Wear Under a Hockey Jersey: Base Layers for Ice Hockey Players

What to wear under a hockey jersey: a moisture-friendly base layer, properly fitted pads, then the jersey over everything so you can still raise both arms freely.

Most ice hockey players wear a comfortable athletic base layer next to the skin, then their protective equipment, and finally the hockey jersey over the pads. The right combination lets you move without trapped folds, extra bulk or sleeves that interfere with your gloves. This guide explains how to choose each layer and how to test the whole outfit before game day.

Choose the layer that touches your skin

Start with a lightweight top that still feels comfortable when damp. A close-fitting performance shirt reduces loose fabric under shoulder pads, although compression is a preference rather than a requirement for every player.

Check the neckline and seams. A collar that rubs during a head check, or a bulky seam under a shoulder strap, becomes very distracting over a full session. Try the base layer with your own equipment before buying several identical pieces.

Thick cotton works for casual jersey wear but can feel heavy and clammy during hard skating. Compare how a shirt feels after exercise rather than trusting a label or a moisture-wicking claim.

Neck protection is separate from your base layer

An ordinary high collar does not count as neck protection. Where a neck laceration protector is required, it must be an appropriate protective product worn according to its instructions and your league rules. Check the rules for your program and age group, because requirements differ between organisations.

Let your pads fit before adding the jersey

Put on and adjust protective equipment first, then add the jersey. A correctly sized jersey covers the equipment without pulling straps out of position and without forcing you to loosen pads to make the garment fit.

Watch the shoulder caps and elbow pads. If fabric catches when you raise your arms, the jersey may need more room through the sleeve or underarm. If it hangs past the wrist, going up a whole size may make the problem worse. Our guide to sizing up a hockey jersey over pads explains when more size helps and when it does not.

Goalies should assess the jersey over the chest and arm protector. A skater jersey in a bigger letter size can still lack the right chest and arm volume, which is why goalie cuts exist.

Dress for the session, not the car park

During a hard practice, extra warmth turns into extra discomfort. Begin with the layers needed for equipment fit and add warmth only where you need it. A cold rink entrance rarely predicts how warm you will feel after ten minutes of skating.

For casual fan-jersey wear the maths changes. A T-shirt, thin long-sleeve top or light hoodie fits under a fan jersey if the chest, sleeves and collar allow movement. Measure the combination you plan to wear instead of guessing from your everyday shirt size.

Test the whole outfit before game day

Raise both arms, reach across your chest, drop into a skating stance and take your normal stick grip. Notice whether the jersey lifts sharply, the base layer bunches or the elbow fabric turns tight.

Change one item at a time if something feels wrong. A thinner base layer fixes bulk; a different jersey cut fixes restricted shoulders. A bigger jersey cannot correct every issue beneath it. Keep a dry base layer for the trip home and wash worn layers according to their labels.

Base layer materials compared

  • Polyester performance shirts: light, quick drying and the most common choice for ice hockey.
  • Polyester-spandex blends: add stretch and a close fit under pads.
  • Merino or wool blends: warm and naturally odour resistant, useful for outdoor rinks or cold arenas but heavier when wet.
  • Cotton: comfortable for casual wear but slow to dry, so usually avoided during hard skating.

There is no single correct answer. What matters is that the layer manages moisture, does not bunch under shoulder straps and does not add friction in the underarm area, where repeated arm movement causes chafing.

Youth players and cold arenas

Parents often over-layer children because the arena entrance feels cold. Once a child starts skating, they warm up quickly and a thick layer becomes uncomfortable. Choose a light moisture-friendly shirt first and bring a warm jacket for before and after the session instead of wearing it under the pads.

If a player has trouble staying warm, add a thin long-sleeve layer rather than a bulky one, and always check that the sleeves of the base layer do not bunch inside the elbow pads.

Fan jerseys and casual wear

A fan or replica jersey is cut for casual wear, usually with more room and softer fabric. Wearing a thin layer underneath is normal and a hoodie is possible if the jersey is roomy enough. Select a size by measuring the combination you plan to wear. If you are ordering team jerseys for supporters, a slightly relaxed cut and a size range up to 3XL or 4XL works well. Frequently Asked Questions

Do you wear a shirt under a hockey jersey?

Yes. Most players wear a thin athletic base layer under their pads, and the jersey goes over the pads. The base layer handles moisture and comfort; the jersey handles team identity.

Should the base layer be tight or loose?

Close-fitting is common because it avoids bunching beneath pads, but comfort matters more than compression. Choose what you can skate in for 60 minutes.

Can I wear a hoodie under a hockey jersey?

For casual fan wear, yes if the chest and sleeves have room. For on-ice play, a hoodie adds bulk under pads and is not recommended.

What goes under a goalie jersey?

A base layer, then the chest and arm protector, then the goalie-cut jersey over the top. See our custom goalie hockey jerseys for cut details.
